PRODUCTS GEARS & GEARBOXES OPENING THE SLUICE GATES ON THE PANAMA CANAL

The recently-opened expansion to the Panama Canal has tripled the maximum vessel-size that can use this major international shipping route. There are 16 rolling gates operating the new canal extension, with the 4000 ton sluice gates measuring 30m high, 60m long and 10m wide. The gates needed to be opened in less than five

minutes, with a 43-minute cycle of opening/closing which is repeated 33 times per day, with only 180 minutes of stoppage permitted per month. With a lifespan requirement of 35 years, the gearboxes specified for this project therefore needed to provide 57,000 hours of operation, be capable of operating in humid conditions with high levels of salinity, and offer high reliability. To meet demands, Brevini supplied a solution

based on its Posired 2 helical range, with two gearboxes driving each sluice gate, and each unit weighing in excess of nine tons. With a nominal torque rating of 483kNm, Brevini’s Posired 2 size PD67 gearboxes more than meet the extremely high torques of up to 330kNm required to move the sluice gates.

The gearboxes operate a winch system with two ropes off each drum which, via a system of pulleys, allow the gate to be pulled in either direction. Two gearboxes per winch are utilised in order to have full redundancy in the system but this means that, for normal operating conditions, the bearings are lightly loaded. Without a minimum load on the bearings there is a risk that the rolling elements slide, so the bearings are specially coated with Triondur C to prevent wear and tear and fulfil the requirement for a 35-year lifespan. The gearboxes also include special shaft sealing solutions and desiccant breathers. Should there be a problem with the first gearbox or motor, the second gearbox immediately becomes the driver. Similarly, there is an auxiliary motor and, in case of any problems with the power supplier, the system also includes an uninterruptable power supply.

Approximately 75% of all drive system failures are the result of oil contamination. To help, Renold Gears has introduced the new SmartGearbox, which features an oil condition monitoring system. According to the

company, the patented technology is 60 times more sensitive to oil contamination than a standard dielectric sensor and provides an all-round view of gearbox oil performance. Displaying the real-time condition of gearbox oil, it can be used

either as a stand-alone system or connected to a variety of control and display systems such as PLCs, smartphones and tablets.

performance by continuously monitoring the condition of the oil and reports on any early signs of problems, enabling immediate action to be taken. It also reduces expenditure on expensive lubricants and waste disposal as oil only needs to be changed when required, based on exact knowledge of its condition.

The solution not only cuts

downtime, reduces maintenance and cost of ownership, but it increases reliability and

HIGH PERFORMANCE PLANETARY GEARS

Three new ranges of high performance planetary gearheads have been launched by IMS. IMS.baseline gearheads are standard

drives based on modular designs and ideal for small and medium production runs, as well as samples for prototype work. Available in a variety of different sizes, materials and reduction ratios, there are multiple adapter options to suit different motor and output configurations. In total there are over 1,300 variations of gearhead. These are available in nine diameters from 22mm to 120mm diameter and offer output torques up to 300Nm. The IMS.techline gearheads,

meanwhile, use the same modular approach but for customised solutions and are tailored for high volume series production runs. These can offer a broad range of reduction ratios, diameter variants and material combinations using both metal and plastic, delivering over 10,000 configuration options. These can help OEMs move quickly from production samples to high volume production. IMS.SDline gearheads enable the design of the gear components themselves to be modified, for example to reflect the changing needs of component geometry or materials. This makes it possible, while retaining an unmodified gear tooth profile, to achieve the highest possible levels of customisation to individual requirements.
