With tens of thousands of visitors using the facilities at Auckland’s SKYCITY every day, maintaining comfort conditions – while using energy in the most efficient ways possible – is of great importance to the owners of the building.

SKYCITY Auckland is a multi-purpose entertainment facility and home to the stunning SkyTower – the tallest manmade structure in New Zealand. At the base of SkyTower is the SKYCITY entertainment complex, which features a world class casino, award winning bars and restaurants, a 700-seat theatre, a convention centre and two hotels. The existing BEMS was getting old and no longer met the requirements of SKYCITY so Control Air, a longstanding Trend Systems Integrator, was asked to configure a solution using the latest state-of-the-art control devices with the advantages of an open protocol. Central to Control Air’s strategy was Trend’s new IQ®VISION which integrates Trend controllers, third party smart devices and internet protocols into a centralised software platform that is designed to manage buildings at an enterprise level.

Five new user workstations connect to the IQ®VISION server via a client connection for both the management and maintenance staff to use. They have access to the

system, with remote access to the site, via a virtual private network (VPN) connection.

The BEMS operates over a new structured cabling system comprising Category 6 unshielded twisted pair copper cable. A wide range of Trend devices was used within the building including the IQ®4E, and IQ®3xcite controllers, which incorporate internet servers that can deliver user- specific web pages to a PC or mobile device, as well as IQ4®NC node controllers that enable Trend products to seamlessly talk to each other across multiple communications networks.

These were complemented by IQ®eco devices with higher capacity, greater flexibility and more inputs and outputs than other similar sized terminal unit controllers. For more information see below, call Trend Marketing on 01403 211888 or email:

IQ®VISION integrates Trend controllers, third party smart devices and internet protocols into a centralised software platform designed to manage buildings at an enterprise level, and give building owners and managers the ability to identify issues and optimise their systems.

Packed with features allowing users to get the best from their BEMS and save energy in real time, IQ®VISION provides graphical information to standard internet browsers. IQ®VISION also has the ability to integrate ‘Third Party’ devices using open standard protocols.

Other functions include centralised data logging, archiving, alarming, trending, master scheduling, system wide database management, and integration with enterprise software applications. IQ®VISION is configured using the Niagara 4 interface, which utilises HTML5 to provide an array of features that are in tune with the demands of the

Internet of Things (IoT). Security is paramount and it comes with in-built authentication requiring users to choose strong Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) passwords that are then encrypted. A comprehensive audit trail of database changes, database storage and back-up, global time functions, calendars, central scheduling, control and energy management routines can also be configured.

“IQ®VISION sets a new benchmark in what’s possible with a graphical, real-time user interface that acts as a window to a BEMS,” commented Marco Nostrini, Trend’s NPI Strategic Product Manager for Software & Connectivity. “It builds on the massive success of the 963 Supervisor by taking functionality and energy management to a whole new level. We have

introduced a wide range of dynamic features that will reduce the amount of money users spend on energy and give them a level of control and fine detail that was previously considered out of reach. This is a genuine game changer.” For more information call Trend Marketing on 01403 211888 or email:

Dunham‐Bush has supplied over 290 Cougar and Puma fan coil units to Woodford Heating and Energy for installation at the prestigious residential development Morello Quarter, formerly the Galaxy House site in Croydon.

Dunham‐Bush fan coil units provide comfort at prestige residential scheme

The Morello Quarter scheme is a joint venture between Redrow Homes and regeneration specialist Menta, operating under the banner of Menta Redrow. Just 15 minutes by train from Central London, this unique development has created 290 two and three-bedroom high specification apartments in four connected buildings, with concierge and boutique style reception areas.

Billy Eastman, Contract Manager from Woodford Heating and Energy, said: “Each apartment has been fitted with ultra-quiet Dunham-Bush Cougar fan coil units, installed to serve the lounge and bedroom areas. This ensures the occupants achieve comfortable room temperatures in both summer and winter.” The Cougar Fan Coil Unit is a slimline (only180mm deep) waterside control chassis unit with EC motors, designed specifically for this type of application. Another important feature of the Cougar model is the simplicity of access for maintenance, such as

cleaning or replacing filters.

Puma Fan Coil Units have also been installed in the reception and lift areas of the building. These units are vertical waterside control chassis units with EC motors. Unusually half of the site has been dedicated to garden landscaping, creating a peaceful outside space for the residents. The residents will also benefit from an on-site gym, and close proximity to shops and transport hubs.

The development aims to achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and has a low emissions strategy.

Priva Blue ID brings accurate temperature control to operating theatres

Priva partner Cube Controls was selected to engineer the Fawkham Manor and Chiltern Hospitals projects. Managing Director, Tony Williams, chose Priva Blue ID hardware which comprises a base on which individual functional modules, containing all mission-critical components, can be installed. Wiring takes place on the base, which is robust and insensitive to failures.

At Fawkham Manor Hospital the needs were specific: “The previous system, which was on the verge of failure, relied on a 1980s’ PLC technology that no one had ever seen before, which in turn was located within an old loft-mounted panel,” said Mr Williams. “We designed and installed a completely weather-proof MCC control panel that could be located adjacent to the new HVAC plant. This meant we could undertake a good percentage of the work in advance.”

is configured with local electrical heaters (frost and reheat) serving the three operating theatres – all now controlled by Priva Blue ID.

“The hospital now has much better control, whereby temperature can be adjusted and managed with ease,” added Mr Williams. The need for greater temperature control was also a growing priority at another BMI Healthcare facility, Chiltern Hospital.

“Chiltern had a very old PLC-based system which had recently failed to the extent that staff would have to manually set valves via an old control panel,” explains Mr Williams. Again, Priva Blue ID was at the heart of the solution, taking direct control of all AHUs as well as a remotely located cold water chiller.

Trend Control Systems, the international manufacturer and supplier of Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), has launched its IQ®VISION monitoring and management solution.

Two landmark projects designed to enhance temperature control at private hospitals are leveraging the attributes of Priva Blue ID BMS (building management system) technology. Both now enjoy much improved climate control – a major advantage in many operating theatre procedures.
