BSEE COVER STORY

Luceco has recently supplied a complete lighting solution to Scarborough University Technical College (UTC), assisting students gain the skills and qualifications they need to succeed in engineering design. We take a look at this project and other similar projects featuring Luceco lighting in education.

Excellent return on investment solutions can be engineered, finding the right balance of cost, efficiency and product life for the demands of specific site conditions. When looking to the long-term of many public buildings, particularly healthcare and education establishments where operating hours are long, the operational costs, materials and labour, for ongoing maintenance and traditional lamp replacement must be included in the ROI calculations. Moving to LED solutions not only removes these significant costs but also prevents the disruption caused to the estate.

W

So, can high efficiency, long life, energy saving LED lighting provide the solution?

Requiring no maintenance over its lifetime with over 50,000 hours of operational life, LuxPanels were installed throughout Scarborough UTC’s buildings serving various classroom applications. IP65 Climate LED luminaires were used in workshops, plant rooms, and storage areas and Academy luminaires were installed in circulation open learning areas and dining rooms along with versatile IP65 rated LED Atlas in stairwells and Titan High Bays in lobbies.

The High Bay offers high efficacy providing instant light unlike traditional HID fittings, also with over 50,000 hours of maintenance free operation. For Scarborough UTC, an LED lighting solution proved to be the answer.

Loans for energy projects

Established in 2004, Salix Finance Ltd delivers 100% interest-free capital to the public sector to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions with loans for energy efficiency projects. Luceco recently supplied hundreds of LED LuxPanel luminaires to Hull College, which has more than 25,000 students across its campuses. The programme was funded by the Salix scheme. High efficiency LuxPanels met the criteria for the scheme and were installed into circulation areas and corridors, lecture suites and specialist facilities such as beauty and hairdressing salons as well as the more traditional classroom.

Lighting the way to learning

The Lighting Design Team at Luceco advise that classrooms should be well lit to stimulate and encourage alertness yet provide a comfortable learning environment. Amenity areas such as canteens and break rooms should afford a relaxing space to unwind and lighting controls should be considered to enhance flexibility of use according to the natural daylight available, the

occupancy of the space and to ensure the area is lit as cost effectively as possible. Lighting in schools and colleges should also create environments that support educational objectives, promoting student comfort, from higher education such as Hull College to entry level and primary schools.

Facility and maintenance contractors, Air Cool Engineering Midlands, were responsible for the luminaire installation at The Pines Special School in Birmingham using square and circular LuxPanels as well as Academy luminaires. The Academy is designed to be an ideal replacement for linear fluorescent fittings, particularly in classrooms, offices, circulation areas and corridors. A high- quality opal prism diffuser ensures any glare is reduced and the luminaire is also suitable for suspended mounting. Selected Academy luminaires installed were fitted with an integral microwave sensor to further reduce energy consumption. With the corridor function selected, the sensor adjusts the light level to 10% of the normal level when the space is unoccupied.

Fit for purpose

Lighting for physical education is often more of a challenge than classrooms for academic subjects, as the space must be fit for purpose for many activities. Luceco has recently supplied LuxBay LED luminaires to sports hall facilities at The Cleeve Sports and Arts Centre in Cheltenham. The Sports Centre has been designed to accommodate a variety of activities and boasts numerous tennis, netball and squash courts, rugby and football pitches, track facilities, dance studio and two sports halls.

Lighting in the main sports hall had reached the end of its economic life. Key factors for Sean O’Reilly, Associate Building Services Consultant from Integrated Architecture based in Gloucester was to specify replacement lighting with low maintenance energy efficient credentials and provide significant cost savings throughout the lifetime of the luminaires.

Installed by Mike Evans, EIS Midlands of Gloucestershire, LuxBay offered a cost-effective alternative to the existing traditionally lamped luminaires. Suitable for mounting up to 10 metres, the LuxBay boasts 105 luminaire lumens per watt, is environmentally friendly and requires no maintenance over its lifetime.

Mounting positions include surface, trunking or suspended and there are options of integrated presence and daylight sensors for use with fixed output or DALI dimmable control gear. Variants include 100, 150 and 200 watts, all with either a wide or narrow clear lens, offering over 50,000 hours of operational life and integral emergency variants are also available as well as attachments including flat wired guards and polycarbonate clear diffusers.

Luceco also recently supplied LuxBay LED luminaires to brand new sports facilities at York University located on the Heslington West Campus by St James College. Installed by Priera Ltd from Sheffield, LuxBay offered a cost-effective alternative to traditionally lamped luminaires, again LED lighting proved to be the way forward. Above all, in an education environment, concentration and performance is essential to learning and a well-lit environment will encourage
