6 : Around the Colony
Colony Losses over the 2015/16 Winter COLOSS (Prevention of Honey Bee COlony LOSSes) is an international honey bee research association with 781 members in 91 countries worldwide. It conducts the largest and longest running
international study of honey bee colony losses. For the winter of 2015/16, data regarding mortality and other data were received from 18,693 beekeepers. There was considerable variation between countries, with the highest loss rates in Wales, Spain, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The losses include unresolvable queen problems after winter as well as winter colony mortality for a variety of reasons. Some countries reported unexpectedly high losses due to queen problems and further investigations about this are planned. See

Apimondia in Istanbul ‘Let’s bee where the continents
meet’ is the theme for the forty- fi fth Apimondia International Beekeeping Congress to be held in Istanbul on 29 September to 4 October 2017. Jeff Pettis, President of the Scientifi c Commission on Bee Health, has written: ‘Terrorists continue to try and disrupt what is normal. They have even struck in Turkey, the site of our next International Congress in 2017. We cannot let them win. Life is full of risks and we should not let random threats prevent us from participating fully in what life has to offer. I encourage you to plan to attend the meeting in Istanbul in 2017. We should work and live in a more collaborative nature and going about our lives without fear is a great start. Enjoy your bees and where the bees will take you.’
The congress will be held at the Istanbul Congress Centre on the other side of the Golden Horn from the old city. Daily tours of Istanbul will be offered as well as pre- and post-congress tours. The ApiExpo will be open from Saturday to Tuesday. The scientifi c programme will fi nish with technical tours on Friday 4 October.
Information is available on the congress website at
www.apimondia2017.org The deadline for early
registration is 30 June 2017.
