o qualify to be part of the England team for the International


Meeting of Young Beekeepers (IMYB) you need to be aged between 12 and 16 on 1 January of the competition year, to have passed your British Beekeepers’ Association (BBKA) Basic Assessment and to apply by looking out for the advert in BBKA News around Christmas time. After England’s selection


process in March 2016 and training at Stoneleigh Park in May, the England team of three set off for the three-day event in Prague on 29 June. I was fortunate, once again,

to accompany the team as chaperone. Younis Bashir, Sam Stott and Rebecca Mundye were the selected team members. While Sam and Rebecca had been part of the team before, it was all new for Younis. As it turned out, the format was new to them all as a very different slant was taken this year.


Format


Previous years have been organised so that countries competed against each other as a team and as individuals. All points accrued were based on beekeeping knowledge. This year, the 60 students from 20 different countries were randomly sorted into ten teams,

the idea being that 18 students had the potential of a podium position. An individual award was still in place but the points accrued for this came both from beekeeping knowledge and


team-player qualities; each team selected its best player based on cooperation, supportiveness of others, etc.
