Around the Colony : 5 Living on the Edge

Scientists from the University of Northampton have found 1000–2000 little solitary bees, Anthophora squammulosa, living on the Masaya volcano, just outside Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. This is the first of its genus to be found living in volcanic ash. Ninety-nine per cent of the pollen these bees collect is from Melanthera nivea, a tough wildflower that can survive the volcano’s acid rainfall.

AROUND THE Colony News from around the beekeeping world

Meet the New Members of the Bee Craft Team Stephen Fleming

Stephen took up beekeeping in 1994, just as varroa was making an impact in the UK, and has been hooked ever since. A geographer by training and with a self-confessed smoker boy as an uncle and a very sweet tooth, the interest somehow seemed inevitable. He runs a small public relations company and especially enjoys the challenge of communicating complex ideas to a general audience. Born and bred in Belfast, he now lives in northern Hampshire with an apiary on Watership Down and enjoys cycling

at home and abroad, reading, writing, wine and honey. Clair Harwood

Clair discovered beekeeping over three years ago when she started helping to maintain two colonies on the business park where she worked. It quickly became a passion. She is excited to share her skills as part of the new editorial team. She hopes to bring many contributions to Bee Craft, including assisting in the design of publications, helping promote a larger online appreciation and creating awareness of beekeeping and bee conservation amongst a new generation.

Richard Rickitt

Richard has a background in the film and television industry. After holding various posts at the British Film Institute and the London Film Festival, Richard established his own animation company, creating visual effects for a host of well-known film and television productions. After moving to Wiltshire, he established a production company to make educational children’s TV programmes with BBC presenter, Justin Fletcher. Richard keeps about a dozen hives of his own and also maintains hives for a

number of commercial clients. He is the training officer for Melksham BKA and the editor of HoneyBee Times, the journal of the Wiltshire BKA. He is married with three children.

Angharad Westmore

Angharad lives with her family on Anglesey. She is a fluent Welsh speaker and has been the Wales editor for netmums.com for the past nine years. She is a keen amateur beekeeper. Correction The photo of varroa mites on drones in the article about varroa treatments (August, page 32) was taken by Simon Croson and should have been attributed to him. Our apologies.
