privilege of supporting the England team and attend this event, not just for the travel opportunity but to meet familiar faces that have become friends. This year’s event and its new format certainly encouraged early friendship opportunities for the students.

The mixed nationality teams had different coloured T-shirts and teamwork was the general theme. Language barriers were evident but cooperation was key to each team’s success. The end result was that no one country won and individual winners were based on knowledge and peer selection.

Prague

Czech beekeepers certainly looked after us all very well. We had the opening ceremony in parliament. We had a great tour of Prague, wearing the same

outfits for ease of identification. The closing ceremony and prize giving took place in the theatre and we were treated to a super final night on board a boat on the Vltava River through Prague. The students were all asked about the new format and their general thoughts were that it was more social and less competitive. One adult suggested to me that, as the name suggests, it should be, and was, a meeting of young beekeepers. Competition was evident but not a major focus this time.

News of the vote to leave the

European Union (EU) went with us to Prague, but I am delighted to report that the beekeepers all welcomed us. The future of beekeeping is with these young people and the friendships made will certainly support their beekeeping as well as

their friendships across waters for years to come. If you are interested, there is a video of the event at https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=9S99UCeA8fo

Next Year

Next year, WE are hosting the International Meeting of Young Beekeepers here in

England. We look forward to welcoming friends from 20 or even 30 countries to experience beekeeping, friendships and fun together in 2017.

If you know a young beekeeper who meets the eligibility criteria, then encourage them to apply to be part of the England team for 2017. It should be fun. 
