Meirionnydd Beekeepers on Show : 25 THE ROYAL WELSH SHOW Beekeepers on Show Meirionnydd Pauline Aslin
his year it was the turn of Meirionnydd county (now part of Gwynedd) to host the Royal Welsh Show and the Meirionnydd Beekeepers’ Association (MBKA) was invited to take a stand within the Honey Section. We decided to showcase beekeeping in our beautiful county, much of which is within the Snowdonia National Park.
T A Beautiful County
Meirionnydd has some of the most stunning, and challenging, environments for beekeeping. We have mountains and coast, estuaries and woodlands – and all sorts of weather. With sponsorship from the Snowdonia National Park and C Wynne Jones of Ruthin, we commissioned
Greengage Films to make a short bilingual film which we had on a continuous loop at the show. It is now available to watch on the MBKA website:
www.mbka.info. We will be using this film at other events to publicise our association and what we do, while promoting our wonderful county too.

Model Hive
We also built a large model hive so that children visiting our stand could dress up as beekeepers or become worker bees and take coloured blocks, representing pollen and nectar, into the hive where they could deposit them in a special comb. One of our members had even found some little buckets that looked like flowers to keep the blocks in ready for our ‘workers’ to collect them. The design and construction of the children’s interactive hive took some months with materials being paid for with help from several other sponsors.
Plans Available
We will be using the hive again at other events and are happy to make the plans available to other associations. If you are interested, please contact
