CASESTUDIES On the ladder
Real stories from the world of work
David Lowe is an e-commerce finance manager at TJX Europe
I
joined TJX Europe in December 2010. The off-price nature of the business means everything is fast paced and you are not sure what is going to happen next. This makes it an exciting place to work. In addition, the open-door nature of the business promotes a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Graduates are given responsibility
from the moment they arrive. My first rotation was in the store’s finance team, where I had to report on payroll that was sent to all the store managers within a few weeks of starting. This responsibility was increased in my second role, where I consolidated the European financial results before submitting them to the US. In my final graduate role I moved
into e-commerce and had a direct report working for me. Overall, the graduate programme is a great way to gain responsibility in a controlled and measured way that also enables you to develop quickly. Although a little daunting at first, everyone around you is always willing to support you and help you learn. Upon entering the business I had
a detailed timetable that gave me a solid foundation in understanding the business, which is important, as we are so unique. This involved speaking to other parts of the business, visiting our distribution centres to understand our supply chain, as well as working for a day in a store. On top of that I was given practical training for day-to-day needs to work in the finance area of the business, such as on the IT systems, as well as an introduction to the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), which is supported on the scheme. After my three rotations as part of the graduate scheme and completing the CIMA course, I was promoted to finance manager in the e-commerce division.

The graduate scheme has accelerated my development as it has allowed me to make mistakes and learn in a positive environment. Each year added a little more responsibility and that will hopefully continue as I look to my next role within TJX.
