NEWS & VIEWS continued

as of April 11, however, the Wicomico County States Attorney visited DEFHR to see some of the Hebron horses that are being fostered there. DEFHR took 12 of the worse cases with one horse having to be euthanized shortly after arriving and a second horse being euthanized mid-April. T e States Attorney’s offi ce is gath- ering veterinarian reports and other evidence from all foster locations, which are spread out in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Penn- sylvania. T e total number of horses related to this case is still unknown since several of the mares are currently in foal and have yet to deliver.

Hilltop Pulls Sternlicht From 2018 Stallion Line-up

In response to an owner’s request to breed a

mare that was a known carrier of Warmblood Fragile Foal Syndrome (WFFS), Hilltop Farm conducted genetic testing on all its stallions. All stallions tested negative except for Stern- licht, who tested positive as a carrier of WFFS. Hilltop staff , who are committed to not only off ering high caliber stallions for breeding but also supporting the sport horse breeding indus- try, promptly pulled Sternlicht from its 2018 stallion line-up and issued a press release in- forming the public of its decision. T e WFFS gene is a recessive defect and horses with only one copy of the gene, like Sternlicht, are carriers. A foal must inherit cop- ies of the gene from both parents in order to be aff ected with the symptoms of WFFS. Hilltop’s managing director Natalie DiBerardinis stated that “in the four years of breeding Sternlicht we know of no cases of WFFS aff ected foals.” As Hilltop investigates WFFS and recessive traits and genetic testing in general, Sternlicht will remain off the stallion line-up. “We hope that by coming forward and openly announcing this

discovery, we can be a positive catalyst for how we as an industry move forward.”

Horseman’s Son Wins Gold in PyeongChang

T e Winter Olympics

continued in South Korea at the end of March with the PyeongChang Paralympics, where 18-year-old Noah Grove of Frederick helped Team USA’s Sled Hockey team earn gold! Noah, son of Maryland-based T or- oughbred racehorse trainer Chris Grove, had his left leg

amputated below the knee when he was fi ve years old due to bone cancer. When he was diagnosed, the Maryland racing community came together to create the “Noah Fund” and raised more than $120,000 to assist with his needs. Grove did not let the amputation stop him and found success in Sled Hockey. He has been on several medal winning Sled Hockey teams for the US, earning a Silver Medal in 2017 at the World Championships in Gangneung, South Korea. He was also on the winning US teams for the World Sled Hockey Challenges in 2016 and 2017. Both those championships were held in Canada. Grove and Team USA also competed, and won again in Italy earlier this year at the Tu- rin Para Ice Hockey International Tournament. At the Paralympics, Team USA tied Team Canada with only 35 seconds left in regulation time. T ey scored a goal in sudden death to win the Gold Medal.
