Maryland Will Miss...
Dr. Elizabeth L. Jones-Lukacs, died on January 2, just one day shy of her 87th birthday. Born in North Carolina, she put herself through school at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia, and married Donald Ru- bin of New York City shortly after graduation. Living in New York, she initially helped support her growing family by working in a pet store and as a writer for World Book Encyclopedia and True Romance magazine, among other publications. When she was 29, she entered medical school at Downstate Medical Center, now part of SUNY. By the time she graduated as a gen- eral practitioner, she had her third of four daughters and married her second husband, Mihaly J. Lukacs of Hungary. Dr. Jones-Lukacs joined the U.S. Air Force
as a fl ight surgeon and served in Saudi Ara- bia during the Desert Storm confl ict. Back in the U.S., she had a short stint on Air Force Two as Vice President Quayle’s physician. She retired from the Air Force as a Colonel. Dr. Jones-Lukacs was an accomplished

equestrian as well, and with her second husband, began to import Standardbred and T oroughbred horses from Hungary. T ey also helped establish in the U.S. the Hungarian dog breeds Kuvasz and Vizsla. Dr.

Longtime Fair Hill International volunteer Shirley M. Carpenter of
West Grove, PA, died on January 9 at the age of 70. Carpenter grew up in Virginia and was a marketing executive for Burson-Marsteller as well as being involved with the Women’s Sports Foundation. She met her future wife, Mary Coldren, 20 years ago at FHI, where Carpenter was a volunteer and Coldren was an organizer. She started T e Country Gour- met and catered the annual competitor parties at FHI for over a decade.
John Schapiro, Jr. of Towson died unexpectedly on January 7 at his
home. He was 78. T e son of the late John D. Schapiro, Sr., he was born into the Maryland horse racing scene and worked at the family-owned Laurel Park. As a young man, Schapiro, Jr., worked at multiple racetracks doing various jobs and learning the craft of videography. In 1960, he also began working for the Baltimore Colts. He traveled the country fi lming horse races and football games. He retired from Pilmico after 42 years but remained dedicated to fi lming the Preakness Stakes through 2015. He was able to fi lm four Triple Crown winners during his lifetime in racing.
Rebecca “Bucky” Spicer died on January 9 at Homewood of Crum-
land Farm in Frederick. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, she fell in love with horses through her grandfather John Lindsay Hanna, who was the business manager for the Sibley Estates. She foxhunted with Sewickley Hunt Club and later was a whipper-in for Beaufort Hunt Club before moving to Maryland after graduating from Penn State University.

the Gunston School in Centreville and also at Happy Valley Camp in Port Deposit. She married John Stephen Spicer in 1955 and the couple eventually settled their fam- ily in Frederick where they founded John- ny-Reb Farm in Woodsboro in 1969. Once in Maryland, Spicer became a whipper-in for Carrollton Hounds and later served in that role for New Market Hunt Club. She ran the fi rst handicapped riding program in Frederick County from her farm. Spicer was also a U.S. Pony Club and 4-H mom, with children participating in both organizations. She bred and showed T or- oughbreds. In 1975, began her competitive trail riding career. With Caynga Vartan (Bart), she logged over 6,000 miles in com- petition. Together they completed the Old Dominion 100-mile One-Day Endurance
Ride. Bart won the Arabian Horse Association’s Legions of Honor, Su- preme Honor and Excellence awards as well as being named Horse of the Year before being retired.
