Western Winning Sisters
Sisters Madeline and Alexandra Rippeon both returned from the annual Quarter Horse Congress with big wins. Madeline (above), 10, earned Top 5 honors in both the 13 & Under and 11 & Under All-Around divisions. Showing Impulsive Ben and Sweet Talking Mo, Madeline also fi nished on the 2018 season with the Justin Boot Award for Rookie of the Year with Maryland State Quarter Horse Association. Nine-year-old Alexandra (below) was the NSBA Bronze World Champion in Equitation. She also
showed Impulsive Ben and earned MSQHA’s High Point Walk/Trot Championship. At Quarter Horse Congress, Alexandra earned Top 5 in All-Around.
New Eventing Series for Thoroughbreds & Standardbreds
In 2018, Carolyn Mackintosh of Loch Moy Farm
in Adamstown started the Maryland T orough- bred Standardbred Eventing Series to promote the post racing careers of racehorses in Maryland. Riders could choose between 17 U.S. Eventing Association-sanctioned events in Maryland to showcase their former racehorses. Because several events canceled due to weather, the qualifi cations for the inaugural series were three events. In 2019, this number will go back to fi ve. T e Maryland Horse Council, Maryland Horse

Breeders Association and Maryland Saddlery sponsored the series. Seed money for the series came through a Maryland Horse Industry Board grant. Over $1,750 was awarded in cash and prizes. T e overall winner was Lindsay Berreth of Leesburg, VA. A Maryland Horse Council member, Lind- say competed her 2000 Kentucky-bred T oroughbred gelding Oh So Extreme (JC name Private Plea- sure). In second place, and winning the High Score Maryland-bred award was fellow Maryland Horse Council member Jaclyn Burke of Mt. Airy riding Sandy the Bear (pictured), who was bred in Maryland by Bonita Farm. In third place overall was Monica Fiss of Aberdeen riding the Pennsylvania-bred Old Fashioned Love Song (JC name Tractor).
