Eventers Earn Top National Standings


Ryan Keefe of Sandy


Spring and Colleen Rut- ledge of Frederick both earned spots at the top of U.S. Eventing Associa- tion leaderboard lists this past year. Ryan was the Intermediate Young Rider Champion as well as the Overall Reserve Cham- pion Young Rider of the Year. Ryan’s main mount for 2018, Flintstar, fi n- ished out the season as the fi fth highest Intermediate Horse.


Ryan was also awarded the Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant from the U.S. Equestrian Team Foundation. T e grant fund was established by Pirie’s


family in her memory with the purpose of helping to provide fi nancial assistance to an event rider who has been identifi ed as an athlete with great talent and ability to represent the U.S. in the future. Ryan received up to $5,000 to be used for training expenses in 2019. Colleen was ranked number one in the Preliminary Master Riders list earning the 2018 championship. One of her top horses, Confi dence Game, ended the season as the Reserve Champion Stallion of the Year.


Pittman Wins Humanitarian Award


On January 10, Steuart Pittman of Dodon Farm in David- sonville was awarded the EQUUS Foundation Humanitar- ian Award at the U.S. Equestrian Annual Meeting in Florida. Steuart was given this award specifi cally for his work with off -the-track T oroughbreds through the Retired Racehorse Project, which he founded in 2010. A former Maryland Horse Council President and former MHC Vice President, Steuart was recently elected County Executive for Anne Arundel County. At the awards ceremony, Steuart said, “Receiving the Humanitarian Award is a huge honor because of the respect that I have for the work of EQUUS Foundation.” He went on to add, “Establishing the Retired Racehorse Project as a thriv- ing national institution was the achievement that gave me the confi dence to enter the political arena and confront challenges faced by our own herd.”


Charity Challenge T e Maryland Open Horse Show


Series awarded young rider Caroline Bosmans with the Charity Challenge Trophy for her eff orts to support the Ronald McDonald House.

Cleveland Bays


T ree Maryland-owned Cleveland Bays fi nished the season with championship honors from the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Cleveland Bay Series. Jackson (right), owned by Joanna Barlow and trained by Dale Proctor, won the overall Grand Championship with Alexa Hellenthal as his rider. Proctor trained two other series winners in Idlehour Naivasha (left) and Idlehour Safari (middle), both owned by Martha Klasing. Safari, ridden by Rachel Farb, was High Point Champion Registered Purebred while Naivasha earned the Reserve Championship in the same division.
