The Museum of the Battle of Fromelles remembers 8,500 dead soldiers
Musée de la Verrerie 76340 Blangy-sur-Bresle They’ve been making glass in this Norman valley since Roman times so there are plenty of fully blown artefacts on display in this museum not far east of Dieppe. Inside the imposing 16th-century Manoir de Fontaine you’ll not only discover how glass is manufactured but you’ll also see some of the most beautiful results of all that blowing. Apparently the majority of the world’s luxury perfume bottles are still made here. There are other museums on the same site.

Musée Jean Cocteau 06500 Menton
So bold and imposing is the Rudy Ricciotti-designed structure housing this museum that it risks upstaging the works of the famous writer, artist and fi lm-maker displayed inside. Among these are graphic drawings, watercolours and fi lm clips, as well as a huge reference section. Although Cocteau spent most of his life in the Paris
region, he loved Menton, dubbed it “the pearl of France”, and was made an honorary citizen of the town in 1958. This museum, based on the enormous collection of American businessman Severin Wunderman, is a worthy tribute.

Musée de la Bataille de Fromelles 59249 Fromelles
In July 1916, the northern village of Fromelles was shaken to its core by a fi erce battle between British and Australian troops on one side and Germans on the other. Within 24 hours almost 8,500 soldiers had died, many of their bodies never recovered. In 2009 a team of archaeologists fi nally unearthed the corpses of some of the missing servicemen and identifi ed them. This moving museum is testament to the fallen who are now buried in a new cemetery nearby.
