MUDO Musée de l’Oise 60006 Beauvais Here’s a museum full of surprises. Despite having more than three-quarters of its collection destroyed by bombs in the Second World War, MUDO has managed to reinvent itself in the intervening years. There are artworks dating from Roman times all the way through to the 20th century: Gallo-Roman bronzes, medieval Picardy sculptures, Italian baroque paintings, decorative paintings, religious art, ceramics, Art Nouveau… all housed in the Gothic residence of Beauvais’ bishop, 70km north of Paris.

This museum houses the University of Strasbourg’s collection of Classical archaeology, including some magnifi cent sculptures, marbles and bas-reliefs. Named after the German archaeologist who established the collection in 1874, it is open to the public but exists primarily to teach students about the Classical works on display. www.amam-strasbourg.org

Centre Pompidou-Metz 57020 Metz

Not to be confused with its mightier Parisian cousin, Metz’s Centre Pompidou focuses on modern and contemporary arts in a variety of media. Its three galleries, theatre and auditorium are housed in an impressive hexagonal structure with a huge, sweeping curve of a roof (supposedly inspired by a discarded Chinese hat found by the architect) and a central spire 77 metres high. It’s by far the most important arts centre in eastern France.
