GREEN COLLAR JOBS BONANZA?

To paraphrase Joe Biden, when I hear the words climate change and innovation, I hear the word jobs - and I mean green jobs.

THE SIZE OF THE PRIZE

A green-led recovery could deliver 1.2 million UK manufacturing and construction sector jobs.

That was the conclusion of research from UK100, a group of more than 100 mayors and local government leaders, published in March.

The analysis also revealed that Lancashire is the area with the potential to deliver the highest number of new ‘green collar’ jobs in construction and property.

It said that more than 33,500 could be created or be in demand in the county as a result of the shift to a green economy and a drive to retrofit to decarbonise properties.

However, he added that more is needed. He said: “To truly set a path for that recovery, we urge the government to build on the 10-point plan announced late last year with even more focused incentives for businesses to invest in green growth.

Across the UK, the move to a

greener economy will create thousands of new jobs

“A city the size of Manchester, for example, could transform itself into the equivalent of a sizeable power station if enough businesses installed just one 5kW solar panel on their roofs and sites.”

He believes changes to business rates would encourage more business owners to invest in significant solar arrays without increasing the amount they pay in taxes.

Peter Emery

Polly Billington, director of UK100, said: “Across the UK, the move to a greener economy will create thousands of new jobs in every local community. It’s really important we don’t lose sight of this critical long-term goal.”

Peter Emery, chief executive of Electricity North West welcomed the green initiatives announced in Rishi Sunak’s March Budget.

He added: “Furthermore, if we are to hit the region’s ambitious net zero carbon targets, we are going to have to invest in the energy efficiency of our housing stock sooner rather than later.

“A new UK infrastructure bank will support large schemes but In line with the 10 point-plan published late last year, the government should also be pushing ahead with more schemes like the Green Homes Grant that will transform our use of energy, kick-start a green economy and drive investment in skills.”

Lancashire leads in advanced manufacturing, so now is the time to jump on the net zero bandwagon - with Boris Johnson’s 10 point plan and COP26 focusing all of the attention on the low carbon agenda, let Lancashire truly Build Back Better.

There are coming opportunities to secure - commercialising cutting edge low carbon tech and bringing those jobs in for Lancashire - manufacturing new energy efficiency kit and renewable energy solutions.

But beyond that, we need to mobilise to train the army of installers needed to put those technologies into every business, industrial premises and residential property.

The drive is now on to find those ground- breaking technologies, match them to our manufacturing capabilities and utilise all the low carbon support we have locally to bring home to Lancashire all the net zero opportunities we can.

Use the Chamber Low Carbon team’s technology development support to help your innovation build, the AMRC and its low carbon demonstrator commitment to develop and showcase your product, and the RedCAT (Lancashire’s Centre for Alternative Technologies) capital funding to grow your capability to get it built.

The next step for Lancashire is to create the capacity to deliver those low carbon and green skills and drive their take up across the county, and campaign for further government investment to put decarbonisation at the heart of Lancashire’s advanced manufacturing for the next generation.
