FIRED WITH PASSION
Working out of her East London studio, Amy Jayne Hughes creates ceramic vases and tableware that add a modern twist to artistic traditions
Ever since her early days as an art student, ceramicist and illustrator Amy Jayne Hughes has been passionate about creating future classics. The Royal College of Art graduate now creates unique pieces of art using the traditional medium of clay, referencing late 17th- and 18th-century objets d’art but giving them a fresh interpretation and a home in modern culture. Amy’s work plays with the aesthetics of
traditional vases, urns and objets. Working with classic shapes and adding relief design, textures and illustrations, she creates pieces that are both
contemporary and usable. “Recent collections have been influenced by French royal porcelain,” she says. “I’ll start with an idea for a shape then let the material or texture guide the design. Each piece is unique and made by me.” Amy’s contemporary creations were chosen
to represent the UK at the 2014 European Ceramic Context, but they are more than just exhibition pieces. These are pieces that are designed to fit into modern and traditional homes. The surface- rich vases, with heavy textures and reliefs, take on matte black and grey finishes. Some are then decorated with bold flashes of gold, turquoise, cerise and azure blue. Her tableware, made in Stoke-on-Trent and based on traditional English porcelain, features her trademark illustrations.
MASTER PIECES In 2014, Amy was nominated for the Young Masters ceramics prize, awarded to those whose work is inspired by the Old Masters. “The resurgence of hand-crafted items is largely down to the widespread recognition and appreciation of the skills required,” says Amy. “People will always want beautiful things. Commissioning future antiques is investing in someone’s time and skill.” As well as creating exhibition pieces,
Amy also works to order. “Sometimes clients come to me with a colour or specific space in mind,” she says. “I work with their interiors and ideals, creating samples before embarking

on the labour-intensive final bespoke piece.” Recent commissions include creating items to display in a castle in Antwerp, drawing inspiration from the building’s age and style. Amy has worked around the world – including a spell as an artist-in-residence in Sweden – and spent much of 2015 as Ceramic Artist in Residence at the V&A Museum. Most of her work is produced in her East London studio. A love of history and a sense of the contemporary have helped create these future classics – all hand-made in Britain.
