1980s SILVER SPIRIT & RUBIK’S CUBE When a young Hungarian professor named Erno Rubik designed a small, solid cube that twisted and turned without falling apart, he had intended it to be a working model to explain the principles of 3D geometry. What he actually created was one of the most engaging and entertaining puzzles ever. It was originally called the “Magic Cube”, but the distributors disliked this name, and it was internationally launched in 1980 as the now familiar “Rubik’s Cube”. The little six-coloured cube came to represent the 1980s and appeared in music videos and movies. An estimated 300 million Rubik’s Cubes have been sold, making it the world’s best-selling toy ever. The year 1980 was also a busy one for
Rolls-Royce, who announced its new Silver Spirit model at the Motor Show in October. The Silver Spirit incorporated all the best- known features of the Silver Shadow series in a modern four-door saloon body, with improved handling and powered by a reliable and powerful V8 engine. The Silver Spirit proved enormously popular, meeting all worldwide requirements for exhaust emissions and safety features.
