hat do Britney Spears, Lisa Riley and Ricky Martin have in common? Apart from being familiar faces on our


TV screens, they each credit yoga with helping them get into better shape, both physically and mentally. Riley says she included yoga as part of changes she made to her diet and lifestyle that saw her achieve a six stone weight reduction. Originating in India thousands of years ago, yoga is the practice of breathing, posture and stretching.

“The great thing about yoga is that it is accessible to anyone. It’s not about what you look like. The important thing is that you have a go and stick at it. It is a great first step towards getting more active,” says Barbara Britner, head of employee relations at the Trust. Three forms of yoga are offered across the Trust’s sites. Vinyasa, which focuses on improving strength, muscle tone, flexibility and self-confidence, along with yin and restorative yoga, which are more suited to those recovering from an injury, suffering from stress or who prefer a gentler class. All classes are


accessible to everyone, as the teachers provide options to modify the poses to suit different abilities.


As a low impact form of exercise, yoga is a great route into a healthier lifestyle. Devotees say it helps them find the inner strength to cope with the demands of a busy life and there is evidence that it is beneficial for those with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains, and depression. Whilst yoga is considered low risk, you should consult your GP before making major lifestyle changes.


“Almost anyone can take part; whatever level of fitness they are at,” says Barbara. “You don’t need any special equipment. Just come along in regular sports clothes. Classes are friendly and it is easy to get started – we even offer free trial sessions for first timers.”
