Evans Bank in major core software overhaul

Evans Bank, a 13-branch New York State- based community bank, is seeking to go live with FIS’s Horizon core banking system in September of this year. It will be replac- ing a heavily customised version of a sys- tem called IBS from Suchak Data Systems, which ended up owned by Evans Bank following the bank’s purchase of Suchak in 2008.

Back in November 2011, the bank had

the second taker of Vsoft’s emerging Core- soft system. It is not clear why the imple- mentation of Coresoft did not work out. Despite several calls, Howard Martin, CIO of Evans Bank, was not available to comment. At the time of the selection of the Vsoft solution, Martin had described it as ‘very impressive’ and had said the bank was keen to work with a small vendor. FIS had a long-standing relationship

with Evans Bank, says Tere Brun, the suppli- er’s head of community banking solutions, through its use of the ImageCenter cheque imaging system. Horizon has its roots in the late 1980s and runs on the IBM iSeries, so

based Coresoft. Brun admits it might not be the ‘sexiest’ system, but ‘the quality is good, we have good references, and we say what we mean and do it’. The deal was signed towards the end

development of its system having start- ed in 2005 with Carter Bank, a 140-branch community player in Virginia and North Carolina. The system had a commercial

IN BRIEF

Bakhtar Bank in Afghanistan might be going to market for a new core banking sys- tem. The bank is a wholly-owned subsidiary of another local bank, Azizi Bank, and the parent plans to convert Bakhtar into an Islamic entity, according to a source on the ground. Bakhtar Bank, formerly Development Bank of Afghanistan, was taken over by the central bank in 2008/9 and subsequently sold to Azizi Bank.

runs the ICBA core banking system from Malaysia-based vendor, Infopro, which was installed in 2009, but is expected to initiate the search for a dedicated Islamic bank- ing software platform. Its parent is also an ICBA user, having implemented the system back in 2007. Azizi Bank is now moving to Oracle FSS’s Flexcube. The contract for the new core

implementation partner. It is anticipated that Oracle FSS will be a strong contestant for the Bakhtar Bank

deal, as in addition to the ties with Azizi Bank, it also already has an Islamic banking reference in the country, Afghan United Bank.
