Monizo, which is behind a mobile bank account for freelancers, now calls itself (drum roll, please) Coconut. Why make the change, we hear you cry? Last year, UK digital-only challenger bank Mondo became Monzo, following a legal challenge by an undisclosed company. Reaction on so- cial media was mixed. Alongside customers giving the thumbs up, there were those who wondered if a bank should really bring to mind the stunt performing Muppet character Gonzo. Whilst others pointed out that Monzo sounded remarkably similar to Monizo.

In a blog post, Co-founder and CEO, Samuel O’Connor, writes: “Choos- ing a new name has been an exciting journey. But there were lots of reasons for us to make the change. I’m sure you all know that there are a few other great and disruptive banking startups with similar sounding names. Also Monizo, whilst we’ve loved it, doesn’t pass a lot of the tests above. But most importantly we thought we could do better. This was a great opportunity to find something that wasn’t just another startup name. It was our chance to create a brand that means something to our customers and carries our mission: to revolutionise how freelancers man- age their money.”
