The continued growth of mobility in the banking space, coupled with the emergence of digital-only banks across the globe, were drivers for digital deals in 2016. More than 50% of the deals in the category were for implementations in the developing regions of Africa and Asia, highlighting the focus on mobility in these regions.
An interesting aspect in the digital banking technology space is the co-existence of established large back office players such as Temenos and Infosys, as well as suppliers who largely focus on digital channels. A push on the digital front was key for Temenos, and its effort bore results, with Temenos Channels topping the digital category with 30 deals in 2016 alone. Temenos Channels found takers across all regions, ranging from three deals in the Americas to nine in the African region. A major win for the company was a contract from British Arab Commercial Bank. Two Indian players, i-exceed (Appzillon) and Intellect Design Arena (Intellect Digital Banking Exchange) were tied in second place, with 15 deals each. Most of the deals for both companies were in the Asia and Middle East region. A major contract for Intellect Design in 2016 was from China Banking Corporation, while i-exceed had success with TAIB in Brunei.
