Upstart, pictured, an online lender founded by ex-Googlers, has brought Sanjay Datta onboard as CFO. He was formerly VP of Global Advertising Finance at Google.

It has also raised $32.5 million in a funding round led by Japan’s Rakuten and an unnamed “large US-based as- set manager”. Existing investors Third Point Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and First Round Capital also participated. Oskar Mielczarek de la Miel, Managing Partner of the Rakuten FinTech Fund, is joining Upstart’s Board of Directors.

Canada/UK-based blockchain venture, BTL, has announced the addition of Jon Downing to its advisory board. He joins from Visa Europe’s Innovation Hub, Visa Collab, where he set up and led the blockchain practice and was responsible for leading multiple proof of concept initiatives with startups, including BTL, testing ideas for new products and services across the pay- ments ecosystem.

“I am joining BTL because I passion- ately believe in the transformational potential of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies,” says Downing. “BTL have correctly identified and solved for the privacy and scalability challenges through the innovative de- sign and architecture of their Interbit solution – which I directly experienced during the Interbank Settlement pilot, along with BTL’s focus on excellence,

meeting and exceeding client expecta- tions, along with building a compel- ling vision for the future. I look forward to working with its leadership team and board of directors to help realise the company vision of bringing the world’s critical systems into consen- sus.”

Not-for-profit distributed ledger technology trade association, The Wall Street Blockchain Alliance (WSBA), has added Dr. Julio Faura to its Board of Directors.

Dr. Faura is head of R&D for innovation initiatives at Spain’s Banco Santander. He comments: “We are witnessing a rapid evolution of blockchain technol- ogy towards enterprise-grade readi- ness, unravelling the enormous pos- sibilities of shared ledgers and smart contracts. I think it is now time to work collectively to better understand how this technology can effectively be used in a compliant and secure way. The goal is to advance the use of blockchain technology in order to offer customers services that are more efficient, faster and safer for numerous financial transactions.”
