‘We wanted more than an agile methodology, we wanted an agile mindset.’

Fareed Hosain, Habib Bank

‘If a project is six months or one year

long, then you have to factor in holidays and kids coming out of school. People will go missing from the project and slow it down. ‘Once it’s live and you start using it

– then you can figure out what else you want’.

Habib Bank HQ, Karachi

While speed was of the essence, he

stresses that the new product does have to add business value. It’s not fast simply for the sake of it. Hosain says that during the imple-

mentation there were some minor glitch- es – ‘but no show stoppers and no deal breakers’.

Start me up The new platform has given HBL ‘the agility to introduce game-changing products and solutions more rapidly’, Hosain states, but he points out that in Pakistan the market is ‘still starting up’. Vendors wishing to do business in the

country also have to recognise that ‘inte- gration is a big challenge’. He says staff training went well – with

the bank’s personnel receptive to new ide- as. Misys did the first phase and ‘trained the trainers’. The project was within budget and

Misys’ initial quote was ‘in the ballpark of what we wanted to spend’. Hosain adds: ‘Our focus was on scope, budget and timeline – and we delivered on all three.’

He describes the tie-up between the

two companies as a ‘strategic partnership’. It provides HBL with a corporate bank-

ing infrastructure that is ‘integrated, auto- mated and controlled from an efficiency and risk perspective’, he adds. The next stage will be to ‘integrate with

the cash flow’, and Hosain wants to ensure that all data is in one place and that report- ing is better.

No doubt there will be more deals in

the future, but any vendor, whoever that may be, will have to work hard to secure the next big deal with HBL.
