ARA Represents Members' Businesses at the 15th International Automobile Recycling Congress

RA was on hand at the 15th International Automobile Recycling Congress (IARC) in Berlin, Germany in March to represent the industry and interests of ARA member businesses. CEO Michael Wilson and ARA Past President Ed MacDonald both partici- pated in the three day event which fea- tured a variety of speakers representing auto manufacturers, governmental agen- cies, and industry stakeholders from Europe and around the world. The con- ference sessions had a keen focus on the 95 percent recycling rate target set for 2015 under the European Union End- of-Life Directive.

The IARC brings together stakehold- ers from throughout the end-of-life vehi- cle recycling chain, including auto manufacturers, metals and plastic scrap recyclers, auto recyclers, shredder oper- ators, and policymakers. Over 250 atten- dees participated in the event, which opened with keynote addresses from Erik Jonnaert (ACEA, Belgium) and Wolfram Thomas (Volkswagen AG, Germany). Thomas (Group Chief Officer for Environment, Energy and New Business for Volkswagen) spoke about environmental protection and driving innovation. Jonnaert (Secretary General of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association) spoke about the role of the automotive indus- try in the context of end-of-life vehicle recycling.

Jonnaert alluded to the need to focus on the planet, profits, and people, as well as the importance of keeping environ- mental goals in proper prospective. Jonnaert remarked that there was no need for new legislation in Europe regarding end-of-life vehicles and thought further cooperation between stakeholders would produce more ben- eficial outcomes. to his presentation, CEO Michael Wilson referenced ARA’s call for OEM parts data for professional automotive recy- clers during his presentation at the 2014 IARC and asked Jonnaert about ACEA’s commitment to providing this informa- tion that is required under European regulations.

During the Congress, MacDonald par- ticipated in a panel discussion with speakers from Mexico and India, and shared an overview of the North American automotive recycling model that detailed activities of the Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC) and partic- ularly the Association’s recent “Take Back the Tundra” pilot end-of-life vehi- cle processing program in the Canada arctic. The presentation was well received and many follow-up questions were asked of MacDonald during the remainder of the conference.

ARA Technical Advisory Chairman Andrew MacDonald Serves as Session Keynote Speaker at SAE

uring the 2015 Society of Auto- motive Engineers (SAE) World Congress, ARA member Andrew Mac- Donald was a keynote presenter for the educational session entitled, “End of Life Vehicle (ELV) Management: Reuse/ Recycle/Remanufacture.” As part of his presentation, Andrew provided com- ments on:

• The history of recycling; • Different operational models within the industry;

• ELV sourcing; • ELV depollution processes; • Key revenues centers;

• National and global standards; and, • Information gaps that pose challenges to successful ELV management. The SAE World Congress annually assembles experts in the automotive industry to collaborate and address cur- rent challenges, seek new windows for discovery and exploration, and promote the multitude of opportunities funda- mental for a successful future. The theme, Leading Mobility Innovation, served as a call to arms – a challenge to all engineers to create mobility for the

future through innovative technologies. ARA intends to be a part of that chal- lenge and will continue to work with entities such as SAE to establish effective working relationships with industry part- ners, including automakers. In addition to serving as Chairman of ARA’s Technical Advisory Committee, Andrew also is Vice President of the Auto Recyclers Association of Atlantic Canada, owner of Maritime Auto Parts in Nova Scotia, Canada and certified as a profes- sional engineer.

Green Recycled Parts Members Partner with CAR Program

RA staff and Certified Automotive Recycler (CAR) Committee mem- bers have been reaching out to all Green Recycled Parts™ (GRP) mem- bers to encourage them to also be sub- scribers to ARA’s Certified Automotive Recycler (CAR) program and vice versa. As of July 1, 2015, all members utiliz- ing the GRP marketing program must also be enrolled in the CAR program. To become a CAR member, facilities are required to submit annual environ- mental audits, and an initial application fee of $200 in addition to yearly dues of $100. Last year ARA updated the CAR application which is now based on an easy-to-use point system under which a facility will be evaluat- ed using a point value for each CAR standard. There is no cost to join GRP. Membership in an ARA-approved state CAR program makes you eligible to be part of the GRP program. Once approved by either a state or the national program, you will have full access to the Green Recycled Parts brand to supplement your efforts to market your business and increase sales.
