Make Your Way O

n the television lately, you will no doubt encounter one political can- didate or another being interviewed or reported on. There is no escaping the political climate of America, unless you live under a rock. My kids are even draw- ing their own political candidate conclu- sions. Association President Mike Swift and wife Tracy were spotted on Facebook as they took a selfie at the Iowa Caucus, tak- ing time out to be involved in the debate about the direction of our country. It’s been a long time since I have wit- nessed such political activity.

The global stock market, too, is reacting to this and more with a bear environment. In industry news, affecting automotive recycling is the downturn in scrap metal

values. A February 2016 American Recycler article says, “Businesses are worried, con- sumers are cautious and investors are downright jittery.” With record low scrap values, recyclers must get creative to make up for that revenue. Furthermore, there is the battle of the part number, airbag, inventory, competition and con- solidation invading the marketplace. Adverse conditions are not anything new to this industry, and in the words of Hannibal, the infamous Carthaginian General, “We will either find a way or make one.” As the father of strategy, his greatest enemy, Rome, even adopted ele- ments of his military tactics in its strategic arsenal. Maximilian Otto Bismarck Cas- pari, in the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica,

praised Hannibal: “The man who for fif- teen years could hold his ground in a hos- tile country against several powerful armies and a succession of able generals must have been a commander and a tac- tician of supreme capacity.”

The lesson from Hannibel: Be com-

manding and tactical in supreme capaci- ty! In his hostile times, what won the day was a strategic plan, a tactical mindset, and the courage to implement it. This is the time to unite! Let’s grow ARA membership and let your collective voices be heard. ARA will lead the charge. The industry must stand strong, as they were encouraged to do at the 72nd ARA Convention & Expo (page 28). For anoth- er opportunity to unite, see page 50! 
