Garden Route

There’s something for everyone along the spectacular Garden Route.

HESSEQUA – THE EXPLORER’S GARDEN ROUTE www.explorersgardenroute.co.za Hessequa is the name given by the indigenous Khoi, meaning ‘people of the trees’. The region nestles between the shadow of the the Langeberg Mountains and the warm embrace of the Indian Ocean, and stretches from the Breede River in the west to the Gourits River in the east. Throughout the Hessequa region you will experience warm ‘plattelandse’ hospitality, enhanced by world class gourmet goods such as olives, cheese, wine, aloe products and, of course, our very own world first – fynbos gin. The biodiversity of the area holds a pleasant surprise for anyone with a wanderer’s soul. From water adventures and whale watching to mountain biking and hiking, opportunities to

MOSSEL BAY www.visitmosselbay.co.za Bring guests to Mossel Bay – and bring them home. Because this is where modern human behaviour emerged 162,000 years ago – this makes it the birthplace of culture and advanced technology. Amazingly, the things that attracted our common ancestors to this part of the world – wildlife, fynbos, seafood, beaches, year round beach-going weather – remain some of the things that make Mossel Bay the ideal destination today. Find out more by including a half-day Point of Human Origins tour in any Mossel Bay itinerary. For more ideas, download ‘Things to do’ and ‘Where to stay’ brochures from visitmosselbay.co.za: they’re essential tools for planning a programme in the ‘do stuff’ destination on South Africa’s Garden Route.

AQUILA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE www.aquilasafari.com The four-star Aquila Safari Lodge is a 10,000 hectare conservancy in the Southern Karoo, home to the Big Five: elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard and rhino. It’s the closest private game reserve to Cape

Town, just a short drive from the city, located in the historic Touws River town. The Karoo is on the national garden route. Setting the scene are spellbinding landscapes, carpets of wild flowers and wildlife. It is a place of wide spaces, immense horizons, craggy mountain ranges, jutting hills, an ancient seabed, and a massive clear sky at night. Aquila has a wide variety of safaris, including day trips, horseback, quad bike, overnight and fly-in safaris, as well as 4x4 trails, fishing and themed weekend breakaways.

Aquila Private Game Reserve has gone to massive efforts and expense to source and re-introduce wildlife into the Cape region and places great emphasis on a wildlife conservation educational experience. In addition, Aquila provides over 300 jobs to

the previously disadvantaged community of Touws River, sponsors local cricket, soccer and rugby teams and a full time school teacher. Since October 2015, four rhino have been

born at the game reserve, including a very special calf, born on New Year’s Eve. After being rejected by his mother, the calf is being hand reared by the Aquila team, who hope to eventually reintroduce him to the rest of the group.

The baby rhino is being looked after by ARC (Aquila Animal Rescue Centre), a non- profit organisation set up by Aquila to care for animals in distress. ARC is home to the Saving Private Rhino initiative, which offers anti-poaching training free of charge to rangers working on private game reserves with elephant and rhino in Africa.

The Saving Private Rhino initiative was set up after three of Aquila’s rhinos were attacked in 2011.
