(ATM), Unlocking Africa’s Tourism Potential, produced in association with a number of organisations, including the Africa Travel Association (ATA). The most recent statistics – due to be outlined at WTM Africa 2016 – are expected to remain upbeat. Global research experts Euromonitor International will reveal details during WTM Africa that will show 2015 performed well – with online purchases taking off as consumer confidence grows. According to the United Nations World


Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Africa’s strong performance in 2014 (up 4%) makes it one of the world’s fastest-growing tourist destinations, second only to Southeast Asia (up 6%). The ATM report, published by the African Development Bank in association with New York University’s Africa House and ATA, says the influx of tourists means more money coming into the continent. In 2014, Africa recorded US $43.6 billion in revenue. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the international tourism sector now accounts for 8.1% of Africa’s total GDP.


Africa – a continent of many contrasts


The Sub-Sahara Africa region at WTM Africa is where visitors can meet inbound and outbound exhibitors from around the African continent, including tourist and hotel associations, airlines serving the continent, accommodation partners and tour organisers. Together, they showcase the best of what Africa has to offer.


Tourism to Africa has come a long way in recent years. In a relatively short space of time, international visitor figures have quadrupled, from 17.4 million in 1990 to 65.3 million in 2014 – a huge achievement in just 24 years. inspiring scenery and tropical rainforests and bush life, it’s not surprising Africa is on many people’s to-do list. More people are discovering Africa every


year. In 2014, the continent welcomed 200,000 more visitors than the previous year, according to the latest Africa Tourism Monitor


The ATM says 20 million people work directly or indirectly for the tourism industry and the sector accounts for 7.1% of all jobs in Africa. Considering Africa currently welcomes just 5.8% of the world’s incoming tourists and receives 3.5% of tourism-generated global revenue, the untapped opportunities for growth are immense. Both leisure and business travel are


prospering, according to Euromonitor International and online purchases are taking off as consumer confidence grows. Euromonitor says technology start-ups are flourishing across Africa, which is entering a new era of innovation, boosting economies and offering a new image to international tourists. To underline its importance, in July 2015, US President, Barack Obama visited the Start-Up conference in Kenya, aimed at supporting Africa’s inventors, entrepreneurs and future business leaders. “The travel industry is well placed to benefit in terms of increased domestic, regional and international business travel to many different countries in Africa,” the Euromonitor International report states.
