Foreword
The construction industry is currently tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges, from global warming to rapid urbanisation. But to deliver the innovative solutions that will help create a more sustainable future we need to ensure we’re fit for tomorrow.
The UK government has set the industry the challenge of moving to ‘smarter’ ways of working. This will ultimately enable faster delivery times, lower costs and a reduction in emissions. We need to have the skills technology and processes to achieve this in place by 2016. It’s an obligation. But at Atkins, we’re also seeing it as an opportunity.
We’ve been proactive in implementing building information modelling (BIM) and we’re now able to see, in significant detail, the road, the railway or the facility we’re designing even before it leaves the virtual drawing board. This isn’t just 3D animation. The real power lies in the information that supports the visualisation and the connections that it creates.
BIM changes the way we work and increases the value we deliver for our clients. And we think that makes business sense. So much so, we’re implementing consistent BIM standards across our worldwide operations. So wherever you are in the world you’ll know what to expect when you work with one of our teams.
We’re also supporting the government and industry leaders as we all seek to maximise value through BIM here in the UK. We believe it will enable more efficient construction and deliver infrastructure that can be operated and maintained more effectively. This is just the start of the journey but it’s one we’re proud to be embarking on.
