Atkins worked with Connect Plus, the consortium responsible for managing the M25 motorway, to develop a strengthening and management strategy for the elevated section of the M4 motorway in west London.
The M4 elevated section strengthening and management strategy is being developed by Atkins and Connect Plus. It is expected the approach taken on this scheme can be readily developed for other construction and asset management projects.
Atkins’ role involved structural assessment, strengthening and rehabilitation design, as well as planning future maintenance and strategic intervention. The long-term aim is to maintain public safety while minimising the disruption to drivers, reducing whole costs and meeting contractual hand- back requirements.
The team considered the innovative use of materials to limit the deterioration of the substructures. A phased approach was adopted for structural interventions to prioritise the highest risk locations first. Future works were planned to maximise efficiency and whole life cost benefits.
The M4 elevated section between junctions 1 and 3 includes 126 reinforced concrete piers which support the elevated deck of the motorway. Many piers are showing signs of distress and a strength deficiency has been identified within the ends of the crosshead cantilevers. In order to deliver the project effectively, 3D intelligent modelling was developed, incorporating strengthening works, record information, condition data and long-term asset management data.
