BIM drives efficiency and helps deliver value for money on key education projects

BIM has underpinned Atkins’ approach to the delivery of a number of primary school projects across Manchester. The focus of this work was on driving efficiency and improvements in quality. The BIM strategy employed by the team was essential to achieving these goals.

Atkins has supported Manchester City Council’s plans to provide additional primary school places to children across the region through its work on a number of key education projects. The council’s ‘Basic Needs’ programme, which was funded by the Education Funding Agency, provided the framework for the construction of facilities. The work was constrained by a low budget and had to be delivered to a challenging programme.

The projects varied in scale from a whole new primary school to classroom block extensions. All were delivered in partnership with the framework contractor and used a prefabricated construction system. Atkins provided multidisciplinary services consisting of architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, acoustic and fire engineering. The partnership team also included separate RIBA stage 1-3 architects, a mechanical and electrical subcontractor, and a cladding subcontractor.
