Sobell Redevelopment

BIM used to drive innovation on Welsh school and leisure development

Atkins’ use of BIM has enabled offsite manufacturing and modular design to be implemented on a major school and leisure development in Wales. 3D modelling of all components and a robust information sharing process streamlined construction, fostered innovation and delivered improvements in quality.

Atkins has used BIM to underpin the success of offsite manufacturing and modular design on a community project in Wales. The Sobell redevelopment at Aberdare consists of a new 1,600-place secondary school, leisure centre and sports facilities. Atkins worked with Laing O’Rourke to implement the contractor’s ‘Design for Manufacture and Assembly’ (DfMA) approach on the project and deliver the efficiencies it can offer.

This involved Atkins and Crown House Technologies, Laing O’Rourke’s mechanical and electrical division, working together to develop 3D models of all components, and implementing techniques that would permit the accurate transfer of digital information from design to manufacturing. The information was managed using Atkins’ standards on CAD/BIM projects, and the principals of BS1192:2007 workflows were adopted for sharing design information. This ensured that all disciplines exchanged design files in a controlled manner. It also allowed each team to progress their design based on a greater degree of trust and certainty over the information provided.
