Spanish Post-Covid Recovery Sees
Arrivals Up 220.5%
FROM January to August 2022, Spain received
more
than 48 million international arrivals, up 220.5% compared to the same period in 2021 and 17.2% below 2019 pre-pandemic levels.
More
than 10 million international arrivals were British. In terms of visitation,
the
region of Catalunya has welcomed the highest number of international
arrivals
this year (-27.5% vs 2019), followed by the Balearic Islands (-4.8% vs 2019), the Canary Islands (-10% vs 2019) and Andalucía (-18.9% vs 2019).

Aer Lingus Accounts Show €56 Million in Covid Support for Airline Workers
Aer
Lingus’ recent accounts show that workers for the airline benefited from €56 million in Covid wage supports last year from the Irish government. Accounts filed by its main operating company, Aer Lingus Ltd, show that Government travel restrictions left the airline with a €385 million loss before tax in 2021, against a €576 million deficit the previous year. The Oireachtas made all “non-
essential” travel illegal until July 19th 2021, forcing the Irish carrier to put many of its routes on pause. The “significant reduction in operations” prompted Aer Lingus to use the Government’s Employee Wage Subsidy Scheme, which the accounts state saved the business €56 million last year. Airline workers, rather than the company itself, received the cash in their wages under the scheme, which ran until April lasy year.
