What impact do you want to make? “I want to make just one kid feel the way my musical heroes made me feel about music. I don’t know what the best thing about my music is, that’s for others to decide.”
Who are your biggest influences? “Some of my biggest influences musically would have to be Van Morrison, Cocteau Twins, Prince and Joni Mitchell. Also, I just want to be like Gwen Stefani during No Doubt. I’m so inspired by film as well, it’s so intertwined with music for me. Visual artists like Harmony Korine and Davide Sorrenti inspire me a lot.”

but for a totally independent label to align a sync to tie in perfectly with an artist’s new release is almost unheard of,” Gatrell tells Music Week. “The music industry and creativity is becoming increasingly locked down by what suits certain playlists and the insular label system, so it is incredible to be fighting our way into the mainstream media in the UK with Karl Zine’s Greenscreen.” Gatrell emphasises the importance of working closely with music

It seems almost impossible to overstate the importance of gaming in music and sync at the moment, but Virgin Media’s new campaign doubles down on the idea nonetheless. For Virgin’s new WiFi spot, director Frederic Planchon created a bespoke video game, adding a new layer to sync’s gaming obsession. But perhaps more importantly, in using a bespoke soundtrack from London-based producer and jazz drummer Karl Zine, the ad highlights the opportunities that exist for emerging artists. Zine is signed to independent label, publisher and sync company Wow & Flutter, run by Becca Gatrell, formerly of Universal Music Publishing Group, which supports her new venture through its network. “Securing major advertising syncs for emerging artists is a dream scenario,

supervisor Jesper Gadeberg and agency Adam & Eve/DDB on the spot, to ensure the music helped tell the love story featured in the ad. Beyond that, she says the film – which is running in tandem with a Wow & Flutter spot for Tommy Ashby and Plus! Supermarkets in Europe – marks a watershed moment for her company. “The exposure and financial benefits these types of syncs bring are truly game-changing for artists in this position,” she says. “This is a real moment of recognition for Wow & Flutter, and what can be achieved starting out with great music, a laptop and a lot of staying power.”

ago after leaving school. It’s about loss and watching someone die.”
How do your songs come to life, what’s the process like? “My musical process can differ a lot of the time, but I would say I’m a songwriter before a singer, so lyrics are always my favourite part. I wrote the majority of my debut EP in my bedroom when I was 16 and 17. I made demos at home and that’s when I first started getting into producing, it was just a really good creative outlet that I needed. The songs just show how or what I was feeling at that time in my life. I guess they’re the purest form of songwriting I’ll ever have.”
Do you have big plans for 2021? “My EP is coming out this year, which I’m so excited about. I’m really passionate about this project as it’s songs I’ve been writing since I was 16, so I can’t wait for the world to hear it.”
