TECH TALK

But the big winner(s) will be the ones which will be able to obtain fl ight operations data from all of the ANSPs (NavCanada, SESAR, etc.) and private ADS-B service providers, and quite possibly fi nd ways to collate this with other types of data sources (weather, ACARS messages) in novel ways to provide highly targeted analytical results to customers. The international environment will need to evolve greatly with updated laws regarding ownership and sharing of such data, as well as allow the publication of it (each country has diff ering views on how to manage this now). Collaboration between countries, ANSPs, airlines/operators/ private pilots and others will need to increase in this new area. The key to trusting such analytical information is that the data used is

untampered with, is complete or rather complete (small subsets of data are often not reliable), and can be updated as new data is captured and skewers the resulting analysis. Hence, new strong laws and regulations will be needed to support this. Very few aviation companies have

the resources or personnel to handle such tasks today, so a generational change will need to happen. Younger staff ers who are more predisposed to using smartphones, tablets and apps will need to enter management in greater numbers (and soon) before internal opposition to Big Data will erode. The FAA and the Congressional

Aviation Sub-committee should take note of this as they decide whether to privatize air traffi c control, due to the revenue potential based upon data derived from it.
