What this means is that thanks to NextGen, the FAA will be able to provide comprehensive data dumps on most any aircraft flying in the USA. In the right hands, such data will be collected, sorted and analyzed by aircraft type, route, compared to how aircraft perform in certain weather conditions/routes/etc. Some of the data which FAA will provide is related with flight and surface operations, such as:

THE FAA INTO A DATA UTILITY Essentially, data will be captured on everything that moves in the NAS, when it moves and where it is going. Data over 102,000 flights per day (~5,000 in the air at any given time) covers airlines, general and business aviation, helicopters, military flights, UAV/UAS/drones and even certain types of ground vehicles at key airports. This is a large amount of

data, and over time, this will provide the aviation community with a means of analyzing flight operations as was never possible before. Airlines and operators will better able to optimize route structures, and understand delay patterns on key routes with better granularity, how certain aircraft types perform in certain conditions (and how a competing aircraft type may perform on the exact same route, conditions, etc.). All of this information is extremely valuable in the proper hands. It is not far-fetched to one day the FAA could monetize access to this data to provide funding for itself.
At the moment, the FAA has
over 100 subscribers to the SWIM- generated data, and this number will undoubtedly expand greatly once NextGen moves forward.
