Timing chain wear Timing chain wear has been an ongoing area of concern for OEMs in the latest gasoline turbocharged direct injection vehicles, which have been designed to boost fuel efficiency.


Over extended periods of routine use the timing chain gradually elongates, which can eventually disrupt intake and/or exhaust valve timing, leading to engine inefficiency and increased emissions. And, as emissions legislation continues to tighten, OEMs need to minimise timing chain wear to help avoid noncompliance.


Insight looks at some of the work Infineum has undertaken to better understand the impact lubricant formulations can have on this disruptive phenomenon.


Looking beyond base number


Regardless of whether the global sulphur cap is cut from 3.5% to 0.5% in 2020 or 2025, the marine industry has its work cut out to ensure it is ready to comply.


Meeting these new, wider reaching, SOx emissions targets will clearly impact hardware design, ship operation and the future fuels mix, all of which will in turn affect the formulation of lubricants for low speed engines.


Infineum has been working hard to ensure cylinder oils will continue to deliver sufficient engine protection – no matter what hardware and fuel combination vessel operators ultimately select.

As passenger car oils tend to lower viscosities, to deliver fuel economy benefits, their use in motorcycles is increasingly inappropriate. This means OEMs are now looking for specifically tailored lubricants that deliver excellent hardware protection in this high temperature high rpm environment.


However, developing motorcycle lubricants is a complex business since they must not only meet OEM requirements, but also the different regional needs of end users.

With these requirements in mind, Infineum developed additive technology that enables the formulation of superior and unique motorcycle oil. Infineum Technologist, Pei Yi Lim, provides an update on the latest field trials, which demonstrate the performance of this motorcycle oil additive technology.


Efficiency gains for gas engines


Stationary reciprocating gas engines, typically used to produce electricity and to compress and transport gas, are changing - becoming more efficient, more powerful and more complex.


The latest high efficiency engines generally have tighter tolerances and reduced clearances for engine components, higher compression ratios, increased turbocharger pressures and improved combustion and valve timing. This has created a harsh environment for the engine lubricant, which is now subjected to higher temperatures in the piston zone and higher pressures.


Insight examines the ways lubricants can be designed to keep these latest engines reliably in service for longer, despite the increasingly challenging environment.
