UKLA President’s Report

The UKLA Annual Dinner held on the 2nd November this year was one of the most well attended events for many years and I can also report I have received very positive comments from attendees about the whole evening. This year’s speaker Barry Cryer was certainly a hit regaling many stories of his 50 years a comedian, comedy actor and writer which seemed to appeal to the wide age group present at the dinner. The event continues to be our premier networking event annually and opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues across the industry and already we are receiving commitments for the 2017 dinner.

I would like to thank all of those who participated in the charity auction on the evening which raised and incredible £3575.22 for the President’s Charity Parkinson’s UK.

As a guest on the President’s table for dinner this year I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet with ILMA President Beth Ann Jones and to discuss the common challenges facing the lubricants industry and the important support being provided to members by the industry associations on more and more complex issues arising in the market today.

At the time of writing this report I am sitting in the office of Houghton International in Valley Forge Philadelphia the morning after the election of Donald Trump as President of

America so now we have a period of uncertainty in another major country following the uncertainty created by Brexit in the UK and no doubt something that will have an impact in global economic markets.

As we reach the end of another eventful year in the automotive market with positive signs that the UK sector continues to grow. As an indicator automotive engine production in the UK as of the end of October 2016 was up 6.3%

to 1.9 million versus the same period in 2015 a very positive influence on the demand for lubricants in the UK. Interestingly registrations for all electric vehicles all though insignificant in overall number rose 11.3 %

May I take this opportunity to wish all readers a Merry Christmas and prosperous 2017.

Steve Mayo UKLA President

UEIL President’s Report

First, I would like to congratulate Steve Mayo for his appointment to UKLA President. I met Steve for the first time fifteen years ago and I have always been impressed by his deep industry knowledge.

This is also for me the occasion to greet you all at the start of my mandate as UEIL President. I am very much looking forward to this experience. I inherit from Fabio Dalla Giovanna a healthy organisation that has made great progresses under his leadership. In particular, I would like to highlight the work done to develop a clear identity for our association and a communication platform that will be of high value when interacting with the European authorities. Another important achievement reached during Fabio’s presidency is the successful taxation campaign where we managed to secure a blocking minority from member states to oppose the inclusion of bulk lubes under EMCS. This issue is likely to come back and we need to remain vigilant. However, this is indeed an important accomplishment.

The congress held in Berlin on 26-28 October 2016 was very successful and recorded an excellent attendance – one of the highest in the history of the congress. The program was very interesting, with topics of high relevance for the future of our industry, such as sustainability and future mobility. The discussions following the presentations were engaging – a sure sign that the topics were of high relevance and interest for the delegates. Once again, the program committee did an excellent job! Make sure that you book you calenders for next year’s

congress that will be held in the beautiful city of Bologna, Italy from 25-27 October 2017.

It was extremely pleasing to see a strong presence of ILMA at the UEIL annual congress. There are a lot of areas of common interest for UEIL and ILMA and I am looking forward to a strengthened cooperation between our associations.

I would like to congratulate Suzy Jarman who launched Lube Library,

a new information based online service which can be found here www.lube-media.com/lubelibrary. It is a welcome resource for the industry.

In conclusion I would like to end this note by conveying my warmest wishes of happy Christmas holidays to you and your families and of a successful 2017 for you personally and for your companies!

Valentina Serra-Holm UEIL President
