UEIL Annual Congress Berlin, 27-28 October 2016

Following last year’s successful event in Malta, this year’s Congress sponsored by FUCHS attracted over 200 delegates throughout Europe and beyond, to discuss the latest developments and market insights into the lubricants sector.

The Welcome Dinner sponsored by Petronas gave delegates an opportunity to network and build relationships prior to the official opening of the Congress the following morning.

At the start of Thursday, Moderator Sebastian Crawshaw, Chairman of Oats, opened the Congress by introducing outgoing UEIL President Fabio Dalla Giovanna who officially welcomed delegates to the event. After four successful years at the helm, Fabio passed the UEIL Presidency to Valentina Serra-Holm, Marketing and Technology Director at Nynas AB.

In recent years the morning’s keynote speaker has given a strategic overview of the different factors impacting upon the lubricants sector, and this year was no exception. Blake Eskew, Vice-President of IHS Energy Insight, one of the leading management consultancies in the world, gave his perceptions on the nature of transport and mobility. In a changing world of transportation use with more shared vehicles and different attitudes to transport ownership among the young, future mobility issues might look very different from the issues we face today.

Stalwart of the UEIL Congress Apu Gosalia, Vice President of Sustainability and Global Competitive Intelligence at FUCHS PETROLUB, gave a thought provoking talk on businesses’ desire to preserve performance or its ‘Sustain Ability’. Apu’s view of Sustainability incorporates the Economic, Social and Ecological aspects of business performance, and he highlighted moving to sustainable energy sources at FUCHS as one incarnation of the strategy. Calling the lubricants sector to develop its own regulation on sustainable business practice, Apu challenged the Congress to take up the mantle and form its own code of practice in the heat of the moment.
