Ebury grew its TCM sales and racked up more than 20 books on the Sunday Times bestseller lists

HarperCollins‘ children’s list— powered by David Walliams—was its standout, but it also substantially grew its e-book sales last year

Hodder & Stoughton published the hardback hit of the year with Lynda Bellingham, and had three titles on the Man Booker longlist

Little, Brown Book Group was one of the stars of Hachette’s year, breaking new authors as well as selling brand names in big numbers

WINNER: PAN MACMILLAN

AS TRADE PUBLISHING polarises between global conglomerates and niche independents, there are some who fear for the future of mid- sized companies. But Pan Macmillan’s stellar performance in 2014 showed that these publishers may actually be the best of all at responding to the array of new opportunities and challenges.

Pan Mac was the only Top 10 adult publisher

to grow its sales through Nielsen BookScan’s TCM in 2014, surging 9.8% in a year when the overall market slipped 1.3%. That performance was all the more remarkable because it did not have a single book in the year’s top 50. Instead it spread its successes right across the board, and had nearly 200 different books earn more than £50,000 through the TCM. KEY STRENGTHS

as Francesca Main, this year’s Editor of the Year (see p15). Children’s and international business was strong too, and its digital activity was as ambitious and innovative as anyone’s. If one book typified its year, it was Jessie Burton’s The Miniaturist, nurtured by Pan Mac’s editorial, sales, marketing and publicity teams into a slow-burning hit.

Orion had the bestselling adult fiction title of the year in Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, and Imprint of the Year Weidenfeld & Nicolson (see p17) helped it thrive in non-fiction

Profile Books, the Independent Publisher of the Year (see p11), grew its TCM sales by nearly 20% last year

Vintage scooped the Man Booker, Samuel Johnson and Costa prizes among many other awards, and powered on in literary fiction

Pan Mac was the only Top 10 adult publisher to grow its sales through BookScan’s TCM in 2014

“It is not just selling a lot of books, but trying

to grow the market as a whole, and its efforts to reach people in different ways are hugely impressive,” said the judges. “Pan Macmillan has been building towards a standout year, and it certainly had one in 2014.”

 Near double-digit TCM growth against a declining overall print market  Massive range of successful publishing across lists and genres  Sparkling editorial, imaginative marketing and energetic publicity  Dynamic digital work, including an online book-centric TV channel
