[ TH E WINNER: PROFILE BOOKS
FOR INDEPENDENT PUBLISHERS in the trade, the battle with better-resourced conglomerates can seem impossibly daunting. Profile Books positively relishes the scrap though, and had its best year on record in 2014. Strategic about what it wants, tenacious about getting it and fiercely independent, Profile consistently combines intelligent publishing with commercial success. Its sales through the TCM leapt by nearly a fifth last year, with Karen Joy Fowler’s We are all Completely Beside Ourselves its transformative book. But there was success beyond that with authors including Atul Gawande and Mary Beard, and excellent partnership publishing with the New Scientist, the Economist and The Wellcome Trust. Digital innovation was led by its 80 Days app, sales of which are now well into six figures.
