books, with near double-digit percentage sales growth through Nielsen BookScan’s Total Consumer Market—and so inevitably competition in this category was fierce. For a breadth of activity and a scale of ambition that belies its size, Hove’s The Book Nook scoops the award.
A previous recipient of The Bookseller Industry Awards’ Children’s Independent Bookshop of the Year prize—which is now folded into this category—it flourished again in 2014, thanks to welcoming and knowledgeable staff, a family-friendly environment and carefully curated range. two author events a week, many of them in schools, where it also arranged fairs and organised class trips to the shop. It strives to foster literacy too, leading on a council reading scheme across Brighton and Hove, and is a passionate supporter of diversity in children’s books. It even found time to put on its own Christmas pantomime at the end of the year. All this has made the shop a much-loved resource for children and their grateful parents. “The Book Nook has helped create a community of young book lovers,” said one of them. The judges agreed. “The range of what it does is incredible and the team seem to be constantly reimagining what children’s bookselling can be,” they said. “They make a tremendous effort to get out and bring book-buyers into their shop.”
