2015 Introduction

THE BOOKSELLER INDUSTRY AWARDS bring together the brightest and best of this business to celebrate a year of success and outstanding achievement. This year’s awards arrive as the backdrop to the industry shows constant improvement: the printed book market is up, the digital market contines to build, and more widely—with high street booksellers back on track—we can feel a spring in the trade’s step. This year we have 21 winners including,

for the first time, an author! The Bookseller Industry Awards were created to celebrate the trade, but it always felt remiss not to celebrate an individual book as part of that, as well as those who played a role in its publication. Digital is reshaping the balance of this

to editors, from marketers to publicists, the awards celebrate all aspects of the book business, including those already at the top and those just starting out in their bookish careers. We are incredibly fortunate to work in an industry that is imaginative, collegiate, serious and yet irreverent. For a while it felt as if digital would hollow out this enthusiasm, iron out the wrinkles and rob the trade of its passion. But as these awards (and the awards night itself) show, at its heart the trade remains unbowed—flexible and not broken. I would like to thank the judges for

business, and there is now wider recognition that authors are part of the trade. We take great pleasure in reflecting that. Other awards continue to evolve too. E-book Retailer and Digital Strategy have combined to form Digital Business of the Year, reflecting the fact that there is less a division of roles in the digital world. We are also delighted to be awarding a second Special Award (a chance for The Bookseller to set out its own stall), with this year’s recipient particularly deserving given the trade-wide significance of its achievements in 2014. From librarians to booksellers, from agents

performing the difficult task of picking the winners with their usual dedication and professionalism; the awards sponsors for underpinning what we do; Inspired Selection for sponsoring the reception drinks; The Big Shot for creating a video of the event (available online shortly after this party); my colleagues who make this all happen (every year!); and all of those who took time to submit their entries. Not everyone can be a winner every year, but sometimes taking part can be just as important—what we learn from the submissions, and the conversations around the entries, enables us to showcase what is good about this business in the months and year ahead. Finally, my congratulations to the winners. Getting past the post is merely the final act of a process that will have begun long ago. The dedication you have shown to your businesses, to your colleagues, to authors and to readers has been remarkable. Good work!
