OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE are the names most commonly associated with university publishing in the UK—but as Liverpool University Press shows, there is a lot to admire beyond the collegiate titans. It had the best year in its 115-year history in 2014, with turnover up by a double-digit percentage and net profit hitting record levels too. It was very active externally, acquiring the Dickens Companion series from Helm Information and establishing a partnership with Clemson University Press to work together on the US publisher’s output. It also secured funding from educational research body JISC for an innovative new project to trial Open Access e-textbooks for university courses. One of LUP’s most notable achievements has


been to develop a trade market for its books as well as an academic one. That strategy took another step forward in 2014 with the launch of Pavilion Poetry, a new contemporary poetry imprint to sit alongside its list of

criticism. Poetry is a tough market, but this is a publisher that relishes a challenge. As critic and academic Jonathan Bate said in one of many warm endorsements of LUP’s nomination: “Liverpool University Press is one of the great success stories in the difficult climate of modern academic publishing.”

Liverpool University Press adds this award to the Academic and Professional Publisher of the Year title it took home at this year’s IPG Independent Publishing Awards. “It has had a very impressive year in which a lot of its hard work paid off,” said The Bookseller judges.
