MARKET ANALYSIS BESTSELLERS

17 IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The Bookseller runs a Fiction Heatseekers chart below left every week, a top 10 of the highest- charting titles by authors who have never hit the Top 50. This throws up a mish-mash of up-and-coming authors passing through on their way to the chart’s upper echelons, cult hits, GCSE set-texts and reissued titles by authors who were much bigger deals pre-1998 (when the Nielsen era began). For the year to date, the biggest- selling Fiction Heatseeker see below is Vaseem Khan’s The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra (Mulholland), which hit a high of 63rd place during its tenure as a Waterstones Book Club pick in March. The literary mystery was unfortunate to miss out on a Top 50 place, getting into its stride just around the time World Book Day and Mother’s Day purchases occupied most of the chart. Impressively, Khan’s début has sold more this year than Top 50 luminaries Fiona Barton’s The Widow (Doubleday), Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (Arrow) and Marlon James’ A Brief History of Seven Killings (Oneworld). Philip K Dick’s The Man in the High

Castle (Penguin Classics) has been boosted recently, 34 years after the author’s death, by the Amazon Prime screen adaptation: it has sold 13,720 copies since the start of the year. Mark Millar’s Civil War (Panini) has been another consistent seller throughout 2016, as the hype has built for the latest Marvel film “Captain America: Civil War”. The Children’s Heatseekers top

10 above follows the same lines as Fiction—a mix of plucky débuts and much-loved, consistent sellers. Sam McBratney and Anita Jeram’s Guess How Much I Love You (Walker) takes the top spot for the year to date. Since its release in October 2014, this edition has sold over 111,000 copies (across all editions that figure is more than a million), all without McBratney ever troubling the Top 50. Rod Campbell’s Dear Zoo (Macmillan), in third place, is a similar story—the author and illustrator has sold over 3.6 million books since 1998 (and 1.6 million of Dear Zoo), but has never hit the main list. This year has been excellent so far for Children’s débuts, evidenced

by strong sales of M G Leonard’s Beetle Boy (Chicken House), Lisa Williamson’s The Art of Being Normal (David Fickling) and Ross Welford’s Time Travelling with a Hamster (HarperCollins Children’s). In what will be a shock to any child of the 1990s, Goosebumps author R L Stine makes the list too, having never charted in the Top 50 in the Nielsen BookScan era. In our Non-Fiction Heatseekers

chart above top, self-improvement titles dominate, which is unsurprising in the first few months of the year. Yet, two true crime titles—Jim Quillem’s Inside Alcatraz (Arrow), in first place, and Thomas Grant’s Jeremy Hutchinson’s Case Histories (John Murray)—

have broken through. Anti-self- improvement title Sarah Knight’s The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k (Quercus) hits 10th; however, the subject of the spoof, Marie Kondo, hit a high of 23rd in the overall chart and therefore does not appear as a heatseeker. One colouring book, Richard Merritt and Clare Scully’s The Menagerie (LOM Art), made the chart—hitting the sweet spot between not immediately fading away, yet not experiencing the phenomenal success of titans Millie Marotta and Joanna Basford.
