You must understand the effects of environmental conditions on visibility. Know how to recognize when visibility is decreasing. Know how to avoid IIMC by understanding those items that indicate a loss of visibility. Utilize aided and unaided vision at all times and compare them to each other.

IIMC Recovery: Do not just pay it lip service. (Enough said!)

Understand and be aware of the Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) associated with NVIS lighting. At a minimum, RTCA DO-275 provides recommended ICA for NVIS should an ICA not exist. A properly working NVIS lighting system ensures maximum performance of NVG and affords the aircrew with the best imagery available.

Maintain minimum low light level NVG performance standards based on RCTA DO-275: Minimum Operational Performance Standards for Integrated Night Vision Imaging System Equipment. Because of the continuous technical improvements in NVG equipment, NVG operators should constantly refresh their knowledge, training, and operational implementation with constantly improving NVG products, especially in areas of improving low light level performance that enhance safety of fl ight. Such continuous improvement areas are in enhanced resolution/contrast, increased system response (increased signal-to-noise ratio), increased fi eld of view, improving levels of image quality, and wider dynamic range capabilities (lowest to highest light level operations).
