assessment can be put together by anyone. Well, in theory it can, but having set out the four sides of the fire safety preparation square, would you really be content with just anyone providing you with the document that can draw all this information together, that tells you how and where you could improve and highlights areas for improvement without the intervention of a fire officer? If you haven’t yet arranged for a comprehensive fire risk assessment to be conducted at your care home, make sure it is at the top of your list of priorities -

David Hulton is the health and safety manager at HC-One and has been a member of the National Association for Safety and Health in Care Services (NASHiCS) since 2006 and a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) since 2009. He has worked as a health and safety professional for about 20 years, for most of that time in the care and charity sectors. He has previously worked in health and safety at Anchor, the MS Society and the
Disabilities Trust. David has also been involved with the NASHiCS Fire Safety Working Group looking at how the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) and the Government published guidance document affected care homes, publishing the ‘Additional Guidance Document for Care Homes’ with the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA), which can be downloaded from the NASHiCS website.

With suitable and sufficient preparation you may well be able to prevent a fire starting, stop the spread of a small fire or ensure that everyone who may be in danger is moved to a place of relative safety, but this will only be the case if preparations are in place each and every day – including the perfectly ordinary ones.
