Senior carer wins award for making a difference

Design-led accomodation on former council home site

A design-led residential care home has received planning consent from York City Council on the site of a former council care home. York based architecture and building

surveying practice, wrdunn and planning consultant, O’Neill Associates, have been working on the Fordlands Road scheme on behalf of client, Octopus Healthcare Developments. Located in the Fulford area of the city, the modern residential care home for the elderly received unanimous approval from York planning committee in November 2017. Situated on a brownfield site, the former local authority care home has been closed for five years with the building no longer fit for purpose. Lyth Watson, director of development at Octopus Healthcare, says: “We are delighted

with the decision from York City Council and looking forward to working with the community to develop a high quality care facility that will meet the significant shortfall of care places in York, provide new jobs for the locality and also breathe new life into a long term vacant site.” The Fordlands Scheme will deliver high

quality care in a purpose designed building, with features included to benefit and aid those living with dementia. The scheme was commended by three of the planning committee members, with each individual commenting on the quality of the design and the significant improvement it will bring to the local area. The scheme will now progress quickly

towards construction, with Barchester Care in line to operate the home once built. The home is expected to open summer 2019.

New seafront care home planned on site

of former hotel in popular Isle of Wight The Ocean Hotel in the popular seaside town of Sandown, Isle of Wight, has been acquired by The Care Home Group Limited. Having been under family ownership for the past 59 years, the 97 bedroom seafront property, which offered fine dining experiences, a heated swimming pool and beautiful landscaped gardens, attracted significant interest.

Ed Bellfield, regional director at Christie

& Co’s Winchester office, who is handling the sale, comments, “This was a fantastic opportunity to acquire a significant property in an enviable location and we received high levels of interest from both national and international investors attracted to the UK market.”

Senior carer, Matt Byres, has won Abbotswood Court care home’s quarterly ‘You Make the Difference’ award, nominated and voted for by carers, residents, their families and visitors Matt Byres, a senior carer at Abbotswood

Court care home in Romsey, was rewarded with a voucher worth £100. The award, part of a nationwide scheme to recognise the quality and skills of employees, is run by the Cinnamon Care Collection Group of which Abbotswood is part. Matt was nominated by colleagues for

‘great leadership skills’, his ‘willingness to help’ and his ‘enthusiasm, care and compassion’. Gemma Ridout-Bowden, general manager of Abbotswood, says: “We are very proud of Matt and all our carers. The ‘You Make the Difference’ award looks for employees who are passionate, dedicated, respectful, inspired and united. Matt has all of these qualities and more. “As a senior carer, he sets an example of

excellence, and his calm and cheerful attitude helps create our lovely family atmosphere, which is so appreciated by our residents, their families and visitors.” Matt is from Southampton and has

worked in the care industry for nine years, joining Abbotswood Court in January last year. Byres says: “It means a lot to me that I was nominated by my colleagues. We’re a close knit team and we really enjoy working together. We work hard but we have fun too and we have a great relationship with the residents based on trust and mutual respect. I’m honoured to win this quarter’s award, although I haven’t decided how I’m spending my voucher yet!”
