personal and professional lives, while transformation specialist Jermaine Harris shares his secrets to taking control of your career, your body and your life. Last year, we also introduced an advanced empowerment seminar where we encourage individuals who have attended previous seminars to let go of their limiting beliefs by breaking boards, bending metal bars and walking over hot coals in bare feet. This seminar is led by empowerment activities trainer Tosin Ogunnusi and many attendees have experienced personal breakthroughs that have led to increased confidence, improvements in performance, internal promotions and a more defined career path. For example, a junior team member who was the hospitality manager at one of our homes attended an empowerment day and subsequently took charge of his health by going to the gym three times a week, losing seven stone in weight. He is now the head of health and safety and estates and a very valued member of the team, and there are many more positive stories to tell.

A positive culture

Many of our staff work hard to encourage a positive ‘Blue Cow’ culture and use the ‘Fish’ philosophy to help them stay motivated and bring fun into the work place. Some of our homes shout about their successes and award a toy fish to a staff member each week, using the Blue Cow principles to positively challenge negative behaviour. Others, including myself, wear Blue Cow badges to remind ourselves and others not to let others hold you back.

Last year we held successful empowerment days for 500 delegates from eight different care providers. This included The Care Club, which is an association of care home owners who work together to share ideas and raise standards within their organisations. Attendees from care providers including Majesticare, Precious Homes, Evolve Care Group, Athena Care Homes and Westgate Healthcare found it so useful that they have gone on to create and lead their

own empowerment days tailored to their own company vision and aspirations. There are many other providers doing similar things and changing their management culture and it’s really pleasing to see them take this leap. For example, WCS Care has six homes that have been rated ‘outstanding’ by the CQC, and chief executive Christine Asbury is also a strong advocate of the Fish philosophy. However, there are many providers that are yet to change their mindset or look at ways in which they can embrace a more positive and motivational culture at work. I would ask that they be open minded and join us on what has been a huge journey of self discovery.

Next year, I’m planning to hold a care sector empowerment day for chief executives and other team members in the sector, which is intended to the extend the paradigm shift that we are seeing among those who have already attended our workshops as well as raising money for The Care Workers Charity.

I would like to see representatives from those care providers I have already mentioned alongside any others who would be open to this experience learning and telling others how their organisations and their leadership have changed. TCHE
