MEDICA PREVIEW 2016
MEDICA: taking a look into the future
The MEDICA 2016 exhibition is set to take place from 14-17 November at the Düsseldorf Messe in Germany. The Clinical Services Journal reports on what you can expect from the event this year.
MEDICA is the World’s largest medical trade fair and offers solutions for the complete workflow of patient treatment. It provides an opportunity to see all of the latest healthcare technology innovations in one place and offers a great opportunity to network and gain insights into the latest thinking across a wide range of medical subject areas. The event is made up of a series of individual focus areas, including electromedicine/medical technology; laboratory technology/diagnostics; physiotherapy/orthopaedic technology; commodities and consumables; information and communication technology; and medical furniture and specialist furnishings for hospitals and doctors’ offices. Running alongside MEDICA is the COMPAMED trade fair for suppliers of medical technology. Joachim Schäfer, managing director of Messe Düsseldorf, which will host the MEDICA and COMPAMED events, explains more about the co-location of these two events: “This year’s dual event will demonstrate that the products developed by medical technology suppliers can have a huge impact in terms of delivering better care to patients in hospitals and the community.” MEDICA has identified a trend towards smaller, lower-cost medical devices, with an increasing preference for smart devices which have connectivity options. This requires medical technology companies to source ever more lightweight yet powerful components along with matching energy and data storage systems. Many such solutions will be in evidence at COMPAMED and will be of great interest to the exhibitors at MEDICA.
The event also hosts a technology forum where international experts will gather to discuss political, scientific, regulatory and technical issues. The current status of the Medical Devices Regulation (MDR) and its effects will certainly be among the topics being discussed. The technology forum will also include discussions on topics such as networking and process optimisation of systems, evaluation of medical operational methods, hygiene in ultrasound diagnostics, orbital fractures and a presentation about the biological effect of light.
Complementing the exhibition, MEDICA also hosts a wide variety of conferences, seminar sessions and forums to further educate visitors and there are a variety of forum areas, where the focus is firmly aimed at different topics. The Wound Care Forum is the place to go to listen to case reviews of treatments for patients with chronic wounds such as leg ulcers, pressure ulcers and diabetic feet. Last year there were interesting presentations on exudate management and vacuum therapy, so expect more of this in 2016. Visitors to the Wound Care Forum area will be able to see and discuss the latest wound care innovations including compression bandages and compression stockings, foam dressings and pressure relief solutions.
Digitisation
The increasing pace of digitisation in healthcare is changing the face of medical technology development and it is progressing rapidly across all medical fields. MEDICA visitors will get an idea of what the digital future in healthcare might look like via the

host of exhibitor innovations and presentations within the Health IT and Connected Healthcare forums. Health IT Forum speakers, from all sectors of the health economy, will be discussing trendsetting healthcare IT developments and will provide information on future-orientated IT trends in the healthcare sector. Topics under discussion will focus on the digitisation of medicine with explanations about ‘big data’ and ‘Health 4.0’ as well as discussions about the benefits and challenges that they present. The Connected Healthcare Forum is a recent addition to the event. Now in its third year, it is an area that is growing rapidly. In 2016, it will be the place to discover more about technologies and solutions for networked and mobile healthcare. Demonstrations will include innovative health and fitness monitoring devices and wearable technologies. If you are brave enough visit the Fitness Point you will also be able to find out your biological
